Instructions:
- Rinse the split peas and place them in a large pot with the water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 hour, or until the peas begin to soften.
- Add the onion, carrots, and bay leaves to the pot. Continue simmering for another 30-40 minutes, until the peas are fully cooked and the vegetables are tender.
- Stir in the cubed ham, and season with salt and pepper. Let the soup simmer for an additional 10 minutes to allow the flavors to combine.
- Remove the bay leaves and discard them.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh dill.
